This GRITalks session features the study “Gender, Power, and Selection: How Hiring Panel Composition Influences Women’s Success in a Meritocratic System” by Luis-Enrique Becerra-Garcia and colleagues from Indiana University, USA. The research explores how gender disparities persist in supposedly merit-based hiring systems and highlights the critical role of panel diversity in shaping equitable outcomes. Grounded in theories of homosocial reproduction, gendered gatekeeping, and the myth of meritocracy, this talk deepens our understanding of how institutional structures and evaluator biases shape hiring beyond formal qualifications. The findings have broad implications for women’s leadership, politics, and public administration, emphasizing the importance of inclusive policies and diverse representation in recruitment processes.
