The Department of Materials and Resources Engineering and Technology (DMRET), in collaboration with the Ceramic Training Center (CTC), successfully wrapped up a five-day ceramic skills training workshop entitled Clay Creations: Bridging ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT Campus and Talakag Community on April 21-25, 2025, at the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT Ceramic Training Center. The workshop is also one of the activities during the 2025 Research Week.
Headed by Assoc. Prof. Lori-ann I. Cabalo, faculty member of the College of Engineering, the skills training workshop gathered ten (10) participants from the Local Government Unity (LGU) of Talakag, Bukidnon and BS Ceramic Engineering students of ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT.
Supported by the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT WE CARE Office and Coral Bay Nickel Corporation’s Development of Mining Technology and Geosciences (CBNC-DMTG) project, the participants were trained to develop skills in clay materials preparation, basic slabbing method, throwing potter’s wheel, among others. Lectures, demonstrations, and mini-exhibitions of finished products were also conducted during the five-day workshop.
Using locally sourced clay materials from Talakag, Bukidnon, the ceramic workshop also sought to provide livelihood opportunities for the Talakag residents and hands-on ceramic workshop experience for the students.
This outreach workshop underscores the University’s unyielding efforts to engage and help its local community.
