²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-Iligan Institute of Technology (²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT) continues to play a pivotal role in shaping national education policy through the active involvement of its faculty from the Department of Science and Mathematics Education (DSME) of the College of Education. Professor Manuel B. Barquilla, along with Associate Professors Edna B. Nabua and Jun Karren V. Caparoso, represented ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT in a three-day Development Writeshop held in Manila from August 18–20, 2025.
Organized by the Research Institute for Teacher Quality (RITQ), this event brought together science education experts from across the Philippines to refine the curriculum for the reframed Bachelor of Education (BEd) program, with specializations in General Science, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Earth and Space Sciences. Prof. Barquilla is working on the Biological Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Nabua on Physical Sciences, while Assoc. Prof. Caparoso is assigned to Earth and Space Sciences.
The faculty members were tasked to develop a curriculum framework, formulate program outcomes and their corresponding indicators, and identify and describe the courses for each specialization. They also mapped the new program outcomes against the Philippine Qualifications Framework (PQF), ASEAN Qualifications Reference Framework (AQRF), and the Reframed Teacher Education Program Outcomes.
Once consolidated and finalized, the outputs of the workshop will be presented during the scheduled zonal public hearings across the country to get stakeholders’ feedback on the reframed curriculum. RITQ will then reconvene the curriculum development teams to revise the specializations based on the results of the public consultations.
RITQ serves as the research arm for both the Commission on Higher Education’s Technical Panel for Teacher Education and the Department of Education’s Teacher Education Council. It is a partnership between the Philippine Normal University and the University of New England, Australia, with support from the Australian Government.
²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT’s participation in curriculum development to advance education is evidence of its unwavering commitment to improving the quality of education in the country.
