Innovative teaching begins in RISE classrooms after Action Research Workshop

by RISE Project Team  | Jul 04 2025

This July, as the new school year begins, selected Grade 1 teachers from RISE Project partner schools—Luinab Elementary School, Cabili Village Elementary School, Bagong Silang Elementary School, Villa Verde Elementary School, North 1 Central School, Tambacan Elementary School, Abuno Elementary School, Victor Guevara Memorial School, Angelico Medina Elementary School, and Del Carmen Integrated School—have begun implementing innovative classroom practices.

These efforts mark the first phase of their Classroom Action Research (CAR) projects, rooted in insights gained during the RISE Action Research Seminar-Workshop held on May 25–28, 2025, at the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT Hinaplanon Campus in Iligan City.

The three-day seminar-workshop empowered educators to become reflective practitioners and classroom innovators. It opened with an interactive lecture by Prof. Allan B. de Guzman, PhD, a 2011 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teacher (Higher Education Category) and Professor of Research at the University of Santo Tomas. His lecture, “Doing Classroom Action Research (CAR): Teachers as Bricoleurs,” ignited meaningful dialogue among the 45 participants—comprising Grades 1 to 3 RISE partner teachers and faculty members from the Department of Professional Education (DPRE) and the Integrated Developmental School (IDS) of the College of Education (CED)—with the support of Dr. Myra Ambalong, Education Program Supervisor of DepEd Iligan.

Day 2 of the workshop emphasized collaboration. RISE partner teachers and ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT faculty members engaged in group discussions and began drafting their action research proposals, guided by Dr. de Guzman’s Seminar Information Map—a detailed reference material for action research. Each group identified a specific area of focus for their classrooms, transforming theoretical knowledge into concrete, actionable plans designed to improve teaching and learning.

The seminar culminated on Day 3 with the presentation of 13 action research proposals, each reflecting the participants’ commitment to evidence-based classroom innovation. Ten of these proposals are now being implemented in Grade 1 classes across the partner schools. Their progress and impact will be showcased in May 2026 during the RISE Action Research Congress, an event that will highlight how teacher-led research can transform educational practices at the grassroots level.

Through this ongoing effort, RISE celebrates the teachers who have taken bold steps toward improving education through research, innovation, and responsive action. Their classrooms become living laboratories of learning, creativity, and change as the school year unfolds.
